ESSENTIAL CAREGIVER CLIPS - Simona Milas

Texas Caregivers for Compromise is sharing short videos of our experiences and how the changes in Texas regulations, statute, and our constitution have made a difference in our loved ones lives OR WOULD HAVE had those changes only been made in time. These videos are in support of newly filed H.R.8331 by Congressional U.S. Representative John B. Larson (D-CT), and U.S. Representative Claudia Tenney (R-NY) and S.4280, the companion bill filed the the Senate by U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX).

Simona Milas was the administrator at an assisted living facility (ALF) in Texas when mandatory visitation restrictions were imposed on all long-term care facilities nationwide. She was heartbroken that residents who usually had daily visitors felt abandoned when their loved ones were not allowed inside the building but she was helpless to do anything about it. So, Simona brought her kids up to the facility regularly to entertain residents through the window. While this was no substitute for in-person access, this was Simona's way of trying to keep residents from descending further into the depression and despondency that contributes to accelerated disease, extreme weight loss, and rapid cognitive decline.

We celebrate administrators like Simona Milas and hope our legislators will see this clip and understand the extraordinary efforts caregivers like Simona had to take to protect residents and prevent harm.

But what is even more important is that our community of constituents make phone calls and encourage our 38 Congressional representatives in the House in D.C. to support H.R.8331 for all residents in all states. This important legislation will not solve every crisis related to safety and health emergencies in long-term care but it strikes a balance that will prevent forced isolation in the future and the devastating effects of those protocols.

We are Texas Caregivers for Compromise and we are #notgoingaway.
