On Monday, March 22, I met with Senator Lois Kolkhorst, Chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and I had an opportunity to share with her much that she did not know about Texas Caregivers for Compromise. I told her how the legislation she authored - SB25 and SJR19 (Prop 6) - has helped not only the residents in long-term care in Texas, but also residents in other states as models for essential caregiver bills and proposed constitutional amendments and how our book that she read to the Texas Senate when she presented SB25 had inspired a national book that has been read to the U.S. House by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney as well as a Florida book that helped support their recently adopted essential caregiver bill. I also made sure she knows that her willingness to hear us helped give us the credibility we needed to be seen as family stakeholders here in Texas and participate in HHSC task forces. We had a chance to discuss the status of visitation in Texas and continued visitation education efforts by our group and by HHSC. Most importantly though, she was impressed by your tenacity and encouraged us to remain vigilant. Senator Lois Kolkhorst is a gracious and dedicated leader, and we owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude.
